Who planned the "psy-op" of making crypto out to be damaging to the environment/society?

I'm trying to get an idea about how the general population perceives crypto. The environmental thing seems to be the main issue people have with it (there's no need to preach to the choir here, I don't think of it as a problem, I think it's effective in helping investment in renewables, and also miners can stabilise the power grid).

But I'm wondering how this concept spread to the general population. This idea that all crypto is inherently bad because of scammers, cryptobros and climate change etc, certainly started in the media.

My current hypothesis:

As time went on, some people felt as though the missed the boat, and read a bunch of anti-crypto media (Most media has been anti-crypto in the last 2-4 years, before that it wasn't as bad).

When media companies realized that most people reading crypto stories knew fuck all about it, but really enjoyed posting snide comments (probably as a defence mechanism because nocoiner)... They doubled down and started printing more anti-crypto stories for clicks.

This has caused significant misinformation to be spread.

So I personally don't believe it was a targeted attack, more of an organic outcome from the nocoiners being attracted to media that justifies their decision not to join in. And then the media just did their thing and tried to farm clicks.

I don't think the governments of the world (UK/US/Europe) were smart enough to co-ordinate such an attack purposefully, and actually most governments aren't as anti-crypto as the media.

It's weird because I remember the literal first news stories about it, and gloating when they announced on BBC news that it had hit $1K.
