When you back up your seed phrase…

All Cryptocurrencies

This is something that really gave me piece of mind. When backing up your seed phrase. Take one word from any placing in your phrase and store it differently. I will do an example:

I create Wallet One and it generates a seed.

  1. Man
  2. Woman
  3. Person
  4. Camera
  5. Television
  6. President
  7. Stupid
  8. Milk
  9. Cat
  10. Fun
  11. Western
  12. Bottle

Take one of these words… let’s say you take Milk, you know Milk is in the 8th slot of the seed. It is important to know that. (This works just as well with a 24 word seed)

Write down your phase and leave that word out. (For extra security put a different random word in it’s place).

Then just store that word like you would any other password. With your password manager on your phone or your Trezor or wherever.

Put the wallet name, the word with its slot position and any note you want about it. Name it something you remember so when you search for it it will pop up, like Wallet One

So if save it in my password manager, I can search for “Wallet”, Wallet One pops up, I look at the password it says “Milk8”.

The reason this works is that when you create a physical copy of your seed phrase the only way anyone can get it is if they physically find it. But a lot of us are worried about someone breaking into our home and stealing it. Or an untrustworthy friend or family member finding it and jotting it down.

With this method, you always have an easy to remember safe word that you keep with you. That incompletes your seed.

The two main worries we have is someone hacking us, and in this case they have to have your whole seed that you typed into an internet connected machine. There is very little they can do with one of these words.

The other worry is someone physically finding your seed, most likely they aren’t a hacker and it would take them a very long time to brute force your seed with even one word left off. Especially if they did not know which position it would be, and which word is an imposter, if any at all.

This has allowed me to feel a lot safer about hiding my seed phrase, knowing even if a house sitter or someone else finds it, my wallet is still on immediately accessible to them.

Hope this helps!

Edit: do not take a random word to replace, because it will stick out. Use a random word from the list of 2000 or so words that are part of the seed word library.
