What really is a Bitcoin?

Yes a generic answer is that it’s code, but really what does it represent. Are they just digitized certificates/receipts of energy consumption or pollution. Is this where the concept of “proof of work” comes from? When I login to my ledger and see my 1 Bitcoin, what do I actually have? What does it represent? As an environmentalist myself is it something to be proud of? I don’t intend for this to be fud. Just a noob who wants to learn.
