For an in-between wallet to get your coins off the exchanges, I suggest using Muun Wallet or Blue Wallet which are both free and made for phones.
This will, at least, give you custody of your coins while you research and get more educated on the different hardware wallets for the one that fits your preferences. Then when you're ready, purchase it directly from the manufacturer and transfer to your hardware wallet.
And a few hardware wallets have robust phone apps that work completely without the need of a laptop or desktop. BitBox02 and ColdCard are two examples.
