Top 15 Cryptocurrencies by Market Cap from 2013 to May 2021

I really enjoy the historical snapshots y'all have been posting lately. Provides good context for where we are today. So, here's another one:

The Statistics and Data channel on YouTube pulled historical market cap data from CMC and created a "data is beautiful" type visualization that shows the top coins moving and changing from 2013 to 2021.

(I had nothing to do with creating the video. Just wanted to share here for folks who haven't seen it.)

I posted screenshots from the video below.

Quick highlights:

• Most of the top coins from 2013 have totally vanished. (Feathercoin? Novacoin?)
• A lot of today's familiar names start popping up after 2017.
• Things really start moving fast after 2019.
• BTC and ETH soar in 2020. (Then the recent winter pullback starts to creep up in 2021)

Quick thoughts:

Easy to assume that the way things are now is the way they've always been -- especially for newer folks. The video is a nice reminder how quickly things change and how new this all still is. It's good to study a little history now and then. :)

(e.g., I got into the space in 2021 and it naturally seemed like BTC and ETH were ALWAYS the big bois. This video shows that was really only the case in recent years.)

This also helps me cool my jets a little about whatever new "hot altcoins" I might get too excited about. They really might not be around very long. As we know even in just the last year some popular coins have eaten it pretty hard.

It'll be interesting to see what the crypto space will look like 10 years from now... Will BTC and ETH still be on top? Will some new coin we haven't heard of yet give the top coins a run? What will the total market cap be? We shall see. (Maybe Statistics and Data will do a part II video in 2031 lol)

Anyway, what stands out to you seeing the historical market cap data visualized like this?
