So many people have lost their funds because they clicked a link in an email they received in their inbox. However, scam emails are pretty much easy to spot if you just take a few seconds to look. I'll give an example of an email that I received today purporting to come from Metamask just to show you what a phishing email looks like.

The sender:

[email protected]

The address can tell that this email has nothing to do with Metamask. The domain name could have been @metamask .com if it was.

The subject:

Your wallet is disabled!

No one can disable your wallet. Metamask cannot disable your wallet. If they could, they wouldn't send an email with such a rude/scary subject. But if you get worried at this point, close the email and check that your Metamask is working just fine. In case you are away from your computer, you can check your wallet address on a blockchain explorer to see that your funds are still SAFU.

First paragraph:

Due to high demand on our network, multiple wallets have failed to complete the latest Blockchain update.

This doesn't even make sense. High demand? What network? What blockchain update? If you're confused at this point, check the latest announcements on Metamask's verified social media platforms.

Second paragraph:

It is important to upgrade your wallet by Februαry 17 to ensure the security αnd accessibility to your αssets.

Scammers like to create a false sense of urgency to lure you to act fast. If there was any real upgrade to be done, Metamask would have announced it way ahead of time to give people ample time to make the necessary changes. But scammers want you to act here and now!

Third paragraph:

If you don't complete the updαte by Februαry 17 you may lose αccess to our service αnd your αssets.

Typical tactic by scammers to scare you into making a decision immediately for fear that you will lose access to the service. A real email would actually tell you that if you are not sure, reach out before you make a decision.

They want to make you think that you are doing something useful by clicking on the link provided. However, the link will lead you to a malicious site that will infect your computer with malware, or the site will ask for your seed phrase.
