My whole financial life runs on spreadsheets. Every expense categorized, every savings target logged, running totals on everything. So when I started buying Bitcoin on a schedule I naturally built out a full cost basis tracker. Date of purchase, amount, price at the time, current value, unrealized gain or loss, the works.

What I didn't expect is that knowing my exact cost basis makes dips feel more personal somehow. Before the spreadsheet, a price drop was just a number on an app. Now it's a specific red cell in a column with my name on it. That feels different in a way that's hard to explain, and I'm not sure it's helping.

The people I read about who hold through everything without flinching seem to either have a very long time horizon baked in, or they genuinely stopped treating shortterm price movement as information worth reacting to. I can't tell if the cost basis tracking is giving me useful data or just more surface area to stress about.

There's probably a version of this where you track everything obsessively and stay calm anyway because the conviction is strong enough. I haven't found that version yet.

Did tracking your numbers closely make holding easier or harder over time? Or did you eventually just stop updating the sheet?

I was active on #bitcoin-otc in early 2009. An inner voice told me 1500 BTC would be enough to live my dreams. Instead I asked for 2500 BTC for $25 and got kicked out of the channel. At the time that amount was only worth a couple dollars, so I felt rejected by the community.
Around the same period I also mined 50 BTC. I wrote the private key on paper, then tore it up because the software wasn’t working right and I figured it “wasn’t meant to be.” I never tried to recover it.
I’ve spent years stuck in the loop of “I could have been rich.” I can’t fully accept that I missed what felt like a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Even the 50 BTC would have changed everything for me.
I’m trying to make peace with it and stay grateful for what I have now. Thanks for listening.

I don’t mean just hold it long term, I mean like I’m going to die with it. I look at my stack and I think, I’m selling that bit on X date or X price or, I’m selling that to buy X.

But then I look at a bit of my stack and I’m thinking I’m not selling that ever.

Coldcard was a shock for the whole community, now everybody thinks about how to improve their security setup. But lot of people doesn’t hold a retirement worthy stack of btc, so sooner or later the question comes around: when and what to do?

I would like to know, what would you recommend a beginner (small amount), intermediate and so on?
When does a reel good (expensive) steel wallet makes sense, when do you really need a passphrase or even a multisig? I mean it’s always an individual decision, but in my opinion in some cases you don’t need the max of the max when the security costs are higher than your stack.
Sure, if you hold 10btc the security should be at its max, but let’s be calm and touch some grass when does someone really need a multi vendor setup?

Been following the Coldcard fallout closely and this is the most interesting response to it so far.

After Coldcard losses climbed past 100 million, developer Calle and AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton organized the Bitcoin Red Team, 16 volunteers globally, pointing frontier AI models at as much of Bitcoin's open source codebase as possible. OpenSats funded the compute, roughly 10k a day, AI developer Moonshot provided model access including Kimi K3.

Results from a 27.5 hour sprint starting August 4: 4,962 total findings across 390 projects. 85 critical, 635 high severity. Project owners confirmed most of the critical reports, and researchers rebuilt working proofs of concept before alerting maintainers, not just AI flagging something suspicious.

The bottleneck isn't discovery anymore according to the team, it's verification and routing. Only about 21 percent of findings had been independently reproduced by the 30 hour mark, fewer than 5 percent of projects had gotten formal disclosure.

Here's the part that makes it concrete instead of abstract. During this same window, attackers exploited a critical BTCPay Server vulnerability, draining Lightning nodes running behind it by stealing macaroon credential files. Foundation, the hardware wallet company, had its own BTCPay Lightning node drained overnight. This specific vulnerability had already been reported to BTCPay by Red Team members. It got found, reported, and exploited anyway before the fix was fully deployed everywhere.

When I was a kid, I wanted to buy in-game currency for a game I played, so I downloaded Bitcoin-Qt at an internet café, I tried mining but didn't understand a thing, so I turned to those survey/offer sites that paid 0.25 BTC per completed survey. I installed a few programs and Firefox extensions, and after a few hours managed to accumulate 1.75 BTC, but I got bored because the amount was nowhere near what I needed, and I ended up forgetting all about it. A few years later, BTC started skyrocketing in value, which devastated me. I decided never to chase after BTC again, yet that childhood memory kept popping into my mind every now and then. That’s why I decided to give it another shot. I’m not overly confident, knowing I missed my big chance, but I know that I won't be able to rest until I give it a shot.

I have never owned Bitcoin until NOW and here is why I’m now buying and holding. Last week when Bessent announced he is doubling Treasury buybacks of US government long bonds it means this:

Those bonds are ILLIQUID meaning the cash is largely locked up in them. Who holds them? Many people including hedge funds. Bessent just told these hedge funds that he will now BUY those previously ILLIQUID bonds creating new liquidity for hedge funds. This begins on Sept 9 but hedge funds are already front running this and buying Bitcoin. This is the mechanics of it in a nutshell. Many don’t currently understand this. They think that Bitcoins move is mostly from a short squeeze but they are not understanding the VERY IMPORTANT fundamental catalyst that has acted as the match to light the Bitcoin flame! This flame is not going away but will only grow as more and more government intervention is needed.

I’m buying Bitcoin because this is JUST THE BEGINNING of the cycle. Sell when retail fomos at the late stages. We are many, many years away from that happening.

This might be a "well duh" question, but do you guys think the whales and institutes pay attention to what retail investors are saying / believing and then manipulate the markets around that?

Everyone here was talking about October lows and then bam were jumping up 10k+ in August, not saying it'll stay here but do you think the big players share a group chat like "lol dumb retails think its October lows let's make it run up in August to fuck with them" ????

If I don’t have $100K of liquid cash and don’t want to touch my savings account. Would you buy $100K of Bitcoin (IBIT) in your 401K? I ain’t touching my 401K for years (20+) anyways. I am afraid that I won’t be able to afford 1 Bitcoin in the next 10 years due its price probably being $300K+. But I have always heard, “not your keys not your Bitcoin”…

Hit the sell order and I’m out. Bought a handful around 16.5 and rode it up. I still think it’s a good bet but I’m retired and the volatility just got too crazy. I used to think marketplace access was a great thing (and probably still is) but it made it too easy for the buy/sell guys and it just no longer fits the portfolio. I kept one just for good measure. I built NYENYC (Not Your Entropy Not Your Coins), a small open-source, completely offline device that generates a standard 24-word BIP-39 mnemonic from entropy supplied entirely by the user.

The device itself generates no entropy. It is basically a glorified BIP-39 calculator: you give it coin flips or dice rolls, it gives you the corresponding 24 words.

It just does all the heavy lifting for you: it collects the bits from coin flips or dice rolls, computes the checksum and converts the 11*24=264 bits into 24 BIP-39 words.

Why?

Because when a hardware wallet generates a seed internally, at some point you have to trust its entropy generation chain.

You can have a perfectly good hardware TRNG, but you still have to trust that the firmware actually uses it correctly when generating the seed. A bug anywhere in that path can make the hardware RNG irrelevant. The recent Coldcard entropy issue is a good example of this failure mode.

With NYENYC the entropy source is outside the device and visible to you.

The part I particularly like is the Von Neumann coin mode, in which you do not need a perfectly fair coin to get unbiased output bits.

Under the normal assumption that flips are independent and the coin bias stays the same, the output is mathematically unbiased even if the physical coin itself is biased.

So you can take a completely ordinary coin and keep flipping until the device has collected 256 unbiased bits.

There are also plain coin-flip and dice modes.

The hardware is intentionally stupid: PIC18F47K42, 2×16 LCD and two buttons. No USB, no networking and no persistent storage. The generated seed only exists in RAM and disappears when the device is powered off.

Looked at Bitcoin-related tweets from the last six hours and something stood out: only 20% showed FOMO-type language and 15% showed FUD, meaning the clear majority of chatter isn't emotionally charged in either direction. That's a pretty tight gap compared to the extreme swings you usually see when BTC is trending hard.

The undertone across the general commentary is cautious optimism, mostly tied to continued institutional and ETF interest, but it's balanced out by people flagging regulatory uncertainty and macro signals as reasons for hesitation. Basically nobody in this window seems fully convinced of an imminent breakout or a sharp pullback, which is a bit unusual given how polarized crypto Twitter/X sentiment often gets.

A tight FOMO/FUD spread like this can sometimes mean the market's in a wait-and-see mode ahead of some catalyst, whether that's a macro print, a regulatory decision, or an ETF flow update. It doesn't tell you direction, just that conviction is currently low on both sides.

It is funny to see how 3 daily and I should say significant green candles changed Bitcoin sentiment.
So called analysts that analyze Bitcoin every day up until 17 August were calculating the bottom using Fibonacci and other measurements and now they're saying they are bullish.
For example Jason Pizzino.
10 days ago his video title was Bitcoin: Countdown to the brutal bottom.
7 days ago his video title was Bitcoin: It's grinding to the bitter end.
And now he is saying we bottomed in and now he started to see bullish signals.

I would like to buy a Steel Backup solution and will use a Storage dropoff address. Shall I buy form a privat person via 2nd hand-shops Like eBay or buy direct form the company online shop. In Both Cases I have to share my Full Name but can also hide my privat Adress via a package public storage dropoff point. I have a degree in Engineering, and I’m well educated about Economics. Bitcoin is a finite asset, that out-techs several other forms of payment. I’ve made custom blockchains to fit different usage cases for several Fortune-500 companies.

Is it possible for retail to transfer BTC in cold storage into IBIT without a taxable event? Grok leads me to believe an accredited investor can essentially develop a private relationship with the firms approved for in-kind transfers and do this for a small fee. Has anyone done it?

Some easy advice for some of you on the fence, or newbies.

1. You never want to sell Bitcoin when it is going down. It's too low and you can't optimize gains.

2. You never want to sell Bitcoin when it is going up. Why would you do that? It will be worth more later!

Summary: don't sell. Never a good time.

I really believe gifting Bitcoin to friends and family is one of the most beautiful ways to introduce them to this space.

When I wanted to gift some sats to my niece recently, I thought about the physical aspect of gifting. I wanted something they could hold in their hands, but generated with strict security.

There are already great ways to do this, but I wanted to add another option to the table. I've been working on an open-source, air-gapped minimal Linux system (SignerOS) for offline wallet creation. I designed a specific "Gift Wallet" page for it:

The concept is simple: Boot into an offline environment, generate the seed safely, write it down on the template, and fund the public address. It gives them a physical paper wallet that was born completely offline.

ONE MONTH ago $7,000 was sent from Coinbase to Crypto.com. A "satoshi test" was required to prove ownership of the bitcoin address it came from (which neither Crypto nor EU regulation requires for exchanges). By one stupid click the "non-custodial" option was accidentally picked instead of "exchange". This has resulted in the impossibility of performing the "satishi test" and releasing the $7,000. We have been trying to get Crypto support to help for exactly ONE MONTH and they are utterly useless. They cannot reset the option to choose "exchange" again instead of "non-custodial" nor will they just manually approve it (their simple chain analysis can see it came from Coinbase).

Support has been completely utterly useless and for the first week would only respond with irrelevant copy and paste generic replies. It has been escalated countless times and they never fix or address the problem. We are now having to contact Crypto.com's regulatory bodies in various countries and god knows how long that will take. All they have to do is allow us to choose the correct transfer option again the coin came from (from Coinbase) which seems to be technically impossible for them. Or they could just manually approve the transfer by verifying with their simple chain analysis that the transfer came from Coinbase. They refuse to do either.

So I work in the AI agent space. Recently, I did an experiment with hooking up an AI agent to Bitcoin, the Bitcoin stack, Bitcoin Lightning, and Taproot Assets, and had agents basically connect with one another. And guys, it gets weird.

Like they make escrow contracts, it was so bizarre. They would construct the transactions, and then the human agent pilots(me) would sign them. i didnt give them their pwn private key, just the master pub key, to make transactions, It's a really interesting combo, and I think this is actually what's going to get very crazy.

Because, you know, for Bitcoin, what it can do, if you need the advanced features of writing your own smart contract in Bitcoin, like M of N, coordinating that with people to get it signed, it's really quite time-consuming and complicated. But if everybody has agents operating on this and constructing and coordinating the signatures of an M of N and time lock and hash lock, and all the cool stuff that you can really do with Bitcoin smart contracts, guys, the future is going to be so absolutely insane with this stuff. Agents construct and organize the coordination of the contract, and then humans review and sign.

And especially with Taproot assets, it is going to be crazy. The agents get to make their own currency. So I'm just wondering if anybody else in the community is experimenting with this. I'm seeing some pretty weird stuff of what the agents do.

What was really interesting is they made themselves a reputation token. Basically, they minted a receipt of their simulated goods and services that they were selling each other. Very, very interesting.

So I think we're going to get some really wild synergy when AI agents start mixing up with Bitcoin to get some really wild things.

And that got me thinking, AI Agents will be able to buy their own compute, energy, hire people, raise capital, pay dividends, maybe even make their own currencies on top of bitcoin and compete with central banks. I suspect people have already let agents loose with some crypto.

Guys, I think is a couple years away from getting really fucking crazy.

I see many, many many miserable people who are showing disgust by the rise of BTC again. There are bloomberg reports and other big finance companies who say BTC will reach half a mill by the end of 2030. You would think majority of BTC community will stand up and celebrate, but sadly I see many partypoopers who display disgust and miserable behavior.

Don't tell me y'all started shorting at 60k which showed strong resistance level, close to 1 year cycle? What you really thought big money was gonna allow you to buy at 40k? If you all desire 40k then it would be impossible to buy at that price, basic supply and demand.

The fact that average Joe is not positioning himself during this rally makes me believe it's the real deal.

I'm a bitcoin relative noob. I've been aware of bitcoin since about 2013 and always thought it was a high risk ponzi scheme for stoners and tin foil hatters, for the simple reason that the only person I ever knew who was into bitcoin and openly talked about it, was exactly that. It wasn't till I got a bit older, and a bit wiser that I took the time to try and understand it.

I've run a successful business for a long time, but never made any life changing money or investments. Frankly, I'm pretty jaded about 'the system', government, inflation and taxation after working myself to the bone for a few decades with very little to show for it. To be fair, I'm fully aware that my life is likely better than most on this earth, so I don't want this to be about 'poor me'. I simply include this for context.

For me, self custodied bitcoin is a means of throwing a middle finger at the man, taking a step toward some self sovereignty, and making a financial decision that future me will thank me for. I lean more toward hodler than trader for what it's worth. The level of traditional financial influence and centralisation on bitcoin currently and in the future concerns me.

I find myself in social situations wanting to talk about bitcoin. Constantly. And it dawned on me recently that I'll never convince anyone without coming across as that tin foil hatter I knew from years ago. Like me on my own bitcoin journey, I realise people need to do their own research and come to their own conclusions. If it's right for them, they'll find it.

But it makes me wonder... what should I 'do my own research' on next? (You don't know what you don't know right!?)

I’m the developer of Aura, a Bitcoin-only self-custody wallet. This isn’t a launch post, and I’m intentionally leaving out the download link.

The recent discussions here about wallet entropy and reproducible firmware made me rethink how developers use “open source” as if it closes the trust problem. It doesn’t.

Public code alone doesn’t prove that:

- the binary in an app store came from the published commit;

- key generation is actually using the entropy source the code appears to use;

- recovery works outside the original app;

- an Electrum server or notification service cannot learn more than users expect;

- or an audit still applies to the version people are installing today.

My current idea of a minimum “evidence package” for a new wallet is:

1. Signed release tags and a documented, independently verifiable build path.

2. A plain-English threat model: what stays on-device, what leaves, and what a compromised device or server can do.

3. Published key-generation and storage details, derivation paths, and recovery test vectors.

4. An independent audit tied to a specific commit, including its scope and unresolved findings.

5. Own-node support and an honest privacy explanation for public Electrum servers.

6. A public security contact and a changelog that clearly identifies security-relevant changes.

For transparency: Aura currently publishes its source and release tags, documents its BIP39 and BIP44/49/84 recovery paths, signs transactions locally, and supports a custom Electrum server.

I Just checked Right now, and you can do it as well in the coin glass website the value of the Long, and it was indicated to 4 Billion dollars, which means brokers will lose this money if betcoin goes up....and before one week the value of Short was just 3 billion dollars, and that was the main reason for that big movement from 64k to 79 k, and all that position have been closed......I hope the same thing will not happen again if Bitcoin goes down to 60K ....

Every Bitcoin cycle has done the exact same three things, in the exact same order, since 2017

New all time high. Brutal drawdown, 80%+ historically. Then a slow reclaim that eventually breaks the old high completely. 2017 did it. 2021 did it. 2025 just did it again, peaking above $126k before correcting hard into this year.

What gets lost in the panic every single cycle is that the drawdown itself has gotten shallower each time, not deeper. 2013 lost roughly 85%. 2017 lost roughly 84%. 2021 lost roughly 77%. Same pattern, same fear, less damage each round as the asset matures and more capital treats corrections as entries instead of exits.

The part almost nobody believes while its happening, every previous "this time it's different, it's finally over" moment preceded a full recovery and a new high. Every one. Doesnt mean this cycle guarantees the same outcome, nothing's guaranteed, but four cycles of identical rhythm is a pattern worth knowing exists before assuming this one breaks it.

History doesnt repeat perfectly. It just rhymes enough to be worth paying attention to.

I agree that part of Bitcoin’s recent rise is likely tied to panic in the bond market, but I also suspect it’s connected to recent capital outflows from Russia.

There’s been a short bank run driven by fears of government asset seizures. While some money is going into brokerage accounts, those assets can still be frozen or seized. I suspect some Russians are moving money into Bitcoin as a more reliable and easily transferable store of value. This is bound to have a positive long-term impact, I’ll check my buddy’s Chainalysis account to see if I can confirm this ????

Just read that US Treasury intervention in the bond markets have not worked and the yields climbed back up before the intervention. It’s obvious that the US Treasury is trying their best to reduce interest rates. I would not be surprised if they announce more of the same, failed intervention policies on Monday. Money printer is going to go into overdrive.

Am I one of the few that believes this is a pump and dump? It just feels like classic pump on news that will eventually be sold off into a new bottom? We've barely had a year of a bear market. Why is everyone seem so sure that was the bottom?

Had a somber thought, the people affected by the cold card exploit gotta be hurting right now. I know I would feel like absolute garbage right now if I lost my entire savings, 7 years of stacking and sacrificing to first lose it all and then watch as Bitcoin pumps 15K in two days.

While I’m a long term BTC bull, I truly believe the bear market isn’t over. So far there’s been no confirmation of the bull market starting, or the bear market ending. Counter trend rallies should be expected, whichever way they present themselves.

This recent pump has been glorious but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 58k again. Recently everyone has decided that the FED is now dovish/neutral and won’t increase rates this fall. But considering the impact of the treasury’s statements on their purchasing of 10 and 30 year bonds was erased in 24 hours, I think the FED might HAVE to be hawkish. And looking at what the FED minutes stated yesterday (everyone seems to have brushed it off because of the news of bond buybacks…how convenient), I think the FED is ready to be hawkish. I think the bonds showed that clearly the market doesn’t believe the administration has things under control and I believe they want to see the FED take action. That doesn’t guaranteed rate hikes, but even the threat of rate hikes is enough at this point. That said, if the FED becomes more hawkish, I think the September meeting can get spicy and considering the Clarity act might be a sell the news event, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hit one last low in September/October. Lining up perfectly with the 4 year cycle.

Now of course, no one knows anything for sure. But considering people have been so quick to call the bottom and bulls have been dancing on the graves of bears, I think this may be just another counter trend rally. One fuelled by an enormous amount of shorts.

I sold during the last bull cycle as well and paid off all my student loans as well as giving myself a good chunk of change I’ve been holding onto for a down payment on a house. In all honesty I only had a small amount of what I had been stacking over the years left and I decided to sell to give myself a bit more of a liquid savings cushion.

Thank you so much to BTC and to this community for enabling me to excel during such challenging global economic times. I hope this next bull run enables many of you the same way BTC has enabled me.

When bitcoin does +14% in 5 days, as it just did, I always feel like my stack is too small to really appreciate the pump and feel content.

But when bitcoin is really low, I cannot pull the trigger and really go all-in. Sure, I maintained my DCA all throughout the bear market, but I kept cash aside by fear of a yet stronger dip.

At least I didn't sell or interrupted my DCA, so I am not a paper hand, but I don't think I can consider myself a granite hand either. More like a wooden hand ahah

BTC’s move today was honestly wild.

The market looked pretty dead, then suddenly the upside starts accelerating and shorts get caught on the wrong side.

Once liquidations started kicking in, it became a snowball — shorts closing → more buying → higher price → more shorts getting squeezed.

Now I’m more interested in what happens after the dust settles.

Was this the start of something bigger, or just another leverage flush?

I am relatively new to the space, I honestly discovered Coinkite when the hack first happened. Obviously curiosity bit me and I went to their site (obviously didn't buy lol). It just made me sad, they seem to make genuinely cool BTC utilities for the masses and take their BTC maximalism seriously. Stuff like the satscard, the opendime, and yes even the coldcard itself.

It just sucks because some of this stuff is genuinely cool and useful but people aren't going to trust them.

Being slightly passionate about watches and bitcoin, I keep thinking about bitcoin in the same way I think about watches. Why did people need watches when they already knew whether it was morning, afternoon or evening?

The watch industry grew gradually because society became more dependent on precise time. Work, transport, productivity, efficiency and eventually competitive advantage made precision more valuable.
So why bitcoin now when we already have bank accounts, credit cards, loans and a financial system that mostly works?

I think that is a much more interesting way to approach bitcoin. Not “will the price go up?”, but what does bitcoin actually allow you to do or own that the existing system does not? And if you cannot answer that yet, maybe there is nothing wrong with simply not owning it yet.

I have a relatively large amount of cash set aside for Bitcoin. I already DCA weekly and plan to continue doing so, but over the last few weeks I’ve also been adding extra lump-sum buys.

I’m torn between three options:

Keep my normal weekly DCA and do nothing else

Split the remaining cash over the rest of the year (or bis November) and add small lump sums regularly and spend the whole amount within the next 2 months

Invest most or all of it now and forget about it

My biggest concern is sitting on a large cash position until October or later, only to see BTC much higher by then. On the other hand, I could invest everything now and watch the price be significantly lower in 6 months.

For those who have been in a similar situation, what strategy did you choose and why?

And of course, nobody knows. Just here exchanging some ideas.

This was the article I read that got me interested in Bitcoin. There's a bit in there about Gartner Hype Cycles which always stuck with with me and comes back during these 'boring' days, weeks and months.

The plateau persists for a prolonged period of time and forms, as Casey calls it, a “stable, boring low”. During the plateau, public interest in the technology will dwindle but it will continue to be developed and the collection of strong believers will slowly grow. A new base is then set for the next iteration of the hype cycle as external observers recognize the technology is not going away and that investing in it may not be as risky as it seemed during the crash phase of the cycle. The next iteration of the hype cycle will bring in a much larger set of adopters and be far greater in magnitude.

The full thing is well worth a read if you've lost some enthusiasm recently!

Been sitting on this for a couple of days because I keep going back and forth on it.

We're about 49% off the October high, price has been glued to the mid 60s for weeks, and realized vol is about as dead as I've seen it. Everyone I know is either quietly DCAing or has just stopped opening the app.

Watched a Milk Road interview with Matt Crosby, onchain analyst, and his argument is basically that the capitulation already happened. He walks through several indicators that hit levels which historically only show up around bear market bottoms, and his take is that waiting for a clean $50K wick, or for an October bottom because "that's what usually happens," is anchoring to a pattern instead of reading the actual data.

The part I found more interesting than the number was the framing. Long bleed, then sideways at low volatility, is what bottoms look like in hindsight, and it never feels like an opportunity while you're sitting in it. Bottoms are boring, not dramatic.

Where I'm skeptical: onchain bottom signals have fired early plenty of times before. And most of those indicators were calibrated on cycles where BTC didn't have this much ETF and institutional flow underneath it. The holder base is structurally different now, so I'm not sure the historical comparisons carry the same weight they used to.

Real question for people who have been through more than one cycle: do you still weight onchain metrics for timing, or has that stopped being useful for you? And does this stretch feel like late 2022 to anyone, or is that just what we all want it to feel like?

I understand the vulnerability does not automatically compromise the wallet because the Safe 7 uses multiple security layers, but the hardware issue still concerns me.
Would you keep using the current Safe 7, or wait for the revised chip and upgrade? Do you think Trezor should offer existing owners an exchange or upgrade option?
Also curious what extra protection others recommend, such as a strong passphrase or multisig.

With the block subsidy decreasing every halving, miners will eventually have to rely almost entirely on transaction fees. How do you envision the mining ecosystem adapting to ensure the network remains highly secure? Will Layer 2 solutions like Lightning reduce on-chain fees too much, or will large-scale institutional settlements keep the base layer fee market robust enough?

Since Bitcoin coin releases use a halving cycle will all of the Bitcoin ever fully be released or will it just get close to 100% but then the halving cycle goes into smaller and smaller pieces but never all of the Bitcoin?

What about for coins that release a percentage of coins in a time period (every year, month, etc.)? Will they ever release 100% of their coins or just close to 100%?

This is extremely impressive from them.

Additionally, they were the first to make their hardware wallet (the Bitbox02) resistant against a very advanced attack: the nonce-covert channel attack. AFAIK this attack has never taken place yet, and the only hardware wallets resistant to it are the Bitbox02 and the 3 Blockstream Jades.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Bitbox, but have been a fan of them for a while and think they're underrated. I'm also fan of Blockstream and their Jade wallets.

I need a way to buy real bitcoin (no ETFs) where I can store it safely on my Trezor or on my raspberry pi zero with seedsigner (still thinking about it). I’ve been looking for a long time, and the best option I’ve found so far is a Bitcoin Well ATM about a two-hour bus ride away, which has a 7% fee. It isn't terrible considering it’s no-KYC, but I’m going to DCA for at least one to two years until I turn 18, so I want to make sure there aren’t other ways that could be cheaper—maybe around 5% would be better.

I do have a TFSA, but it's in my dad's name, and using that would kind of ruin the fun of stacking real bitcoin. Any suggestions?

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me with an issue I'm having with my bitcoin core wallet. I have an offline laptop running ubuntu with core installed as the signing device. I also have another computer online running core and sparrow wallet as a coordinator. I copied an Xpub from the offline machine into sparrow and everything looks good. When I create a transaction in sparrow and try to sign it on the offline machine I get an error message. "failed to sign. Specified sighash value does not match value stored in psbt". The Xpub I copied was the m/84 and sighash on sparrow is default setting.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to send the money to all different wallets and also not to do it all in one go. If you move the money slowly as the hack is discovered each into a new account, yes you might lose some of the money because ppl move it out but not everybody will do that in time. But by doing that, now you cannot distinguish between the hacker and someone who just wanted to move their money out of their wallet.

Now they have the entire world and law enforcement looking at this one account.

I'm curious about the practical side of this.

If the attackers really have hundreds of BTC stolen from the Coldcard incident, how do they realistically turn that into usable money?

For example:

• If they send it directly to a KYC exchange, wouldn't the exchange potentially flag the coins as stolen and connect the deposit to their identity?
• If they use a DEX to swap BTC into another coin, the transactions are still publicly visible, so does that actually solve the problem?
• If they sell P2P/OTC, isn't finding someone willing to buy a large amount of obviously tainted BTC pretty difficult (and potentially risky for both sides)?
• Could they simply hold the BTC indefinitely and wait for the attention around the theft to die down?

Why is this argument so sticky, despite the lack of merit?

Today I was checking Bitcoin, I was never into this kind of matter or interests BUT today I was just browsing the web and checking it out, I'm new in this world and I wish to leanr as I was always curious.

I was impressed when I saw that 1 Bitcoin = 55457,88 €.

I'm interested here about some advice, sound advice if possible, for someone who wishes to get into Bitcoin and start with buying small and eventually grow in time.
Is there anything that I can do? What should I look for on the Bitcoin market and it's fluctuations?

In light of the ColdCard incident, I have created a system that allows anyone to easily generate their seed words using only ordinary dice or playing cards.

Each seed word requires only 3 rolls of two dice or dealing 3 shuffled cards, allowing users to generate their own entropy offline without any bias.

I started buying bitcoin in June of 2021, “to the moon” I said to myself. And surely to the moon it went, until about November. I experienced a premium bag holding experience for the next 18 months.

I never stopped buying though. By August of 2023 I achieved the coveted 1 BTC milestone. Then SBF sent the entire industry into Hades. I still look back at that divet in the chart he caused with fond memories. Twitter (yes it was still Twitter back then) was basically setting bitcoin’s headstone at that time. “Dead for good” they asserted. “Done forever”.

I hear the same things today during my second bear market, maybe life is a flat circle. The same people who emphatically declared bitcoin dead back then are doing the same thing today.

I can’t say when it will happen but I know this. We will see green the likes of which have never been seen before and it will be glorious. It will be so green you will put your phone into night mode to save your retinas and get some well needed sleep!

My portfolio is still green to this day, in the middle of this bear market. The one after Bitcoin was declared dead for the millionth time.

According to the estimates:

• 11.97M BTC (57%) - individual holders
• 3.507M BTC (16.7%) - estimated lost BTC
• 1.26M BTC (6%) - corporate treasuries
• 1.218M BTC (5.8%) - ETFs
• 1.092M BTC (5.2%) - Satoshi’s estimated holdings
• 1.008M BTC (4.8%) - yet to be mined
• 546K BTC (2.6%) - governments
• 399K BTC (1.9%) - miners

From our perspective, this is a strong long-term signal for Bitcoin. As adoption expands and more capital enters the market, there is a limited amount of BTC available to meet that demand. The important point is not simply that Bitcoin has a 21M cap. It is that a large portion of those coins is already held, inactive, or potentially inaccessible and that combination is what makes the long-term story so compelling.

The Coldcard debacle was so shocking because everyone thought they were the gold standard.

Unchained and Casa are the gold standard of multi-sig platforms, support and user experiences - but a leak in their customer databases would be the next big clusterf***. One could say the same for Coinbase - but it's all related: nothing is guaranteed or assured when it comes to our privacy and security.

Am I right to be worried? What could one do to get ahead of that kind of leak?

Something I keep running into when I try to plan this out properly. Every personal finance framework I've used puts a number on things. Percentage in emergency fund, percentage toward retirement, percentage in whatever else. Clean allocations, everything accounted for. But when Bitcoin comes up, nobody really agrees on what that number should look like for someone who isn't all in but also isn't just dabbling. Some people say five percent and sleep fine. Others say anything under twenty isn't worth the admin of tracking it. And there's a version of the argument that says the percentage barely matters if your time horizon is long enough, which sounds reasonable until a rough month hits and you're staring at a number that moved way more than the five percent weighting would suggest it should.

The part that genuinely confuses me is that the percentage feels like it should scale with conviction, but conviction isn't a fixed thing. It shifts based on what you read, what the price did last week, whether you feel good about the rest of your finances that month. That seems like a bad basis for an allocation decision, but it might also just be how most people actually operate and nobody admits it.

What did people land on, and did you get there by actual reasoning or did you just pick a number that felt okay and stick with it?

First off, I'm a Singaporean and am vested in bitcoin. Singapore has strict but clear regulations on digital tokens and CEXes. No capital gain tax. So not fud posting or anything.

Reading The Bitcoin Standard, around 20% through. Here are some thoughts.

The book The Bitcoin Standard focuses on monetary systems, salability of money, hard vs soft money etc, and states that gold as hard money brought about prosperity and wealth in nations while soft money and in turn, inflation brought about their ruin. Two glaring omissions are the economics of and exploitation via slavery and colonism, two major mechanism that funnelled enormous wealth from Africa and Asia to Western nations.

In particular, Qing China used silver as its currency but was impoverished through two Opium Wars, and forced to pay massive reparations to the Western nations for their trouble and ceded land to them as well. Again, the collapse of Qing's economy instead is attributed in the book to its usage of the "weaker" currency, silver, when at the turn of the 19th century, the West, in particular, Great Britain, was having a massive trade deficit as it wanted tea, silk, porcelain, and other refined products from China but had little in return to offer for trade. If not for the combined blunt force of the military might of eight nations brought to bear on Qing China, usage of silver was not an issue as it had a healthy and robust industrial base and near monopoly of luxury goods at that time.

Qing China had corruption eroding the nation from within. But what it lacked was modern weaponry, not the gold standard.

Between gold, silver, fiat, and gun barrels, it is easy to see which is the harder of them. With enough weapons, you can make a nation use monopoly money as their currency if you so wishes.

Anyone had issues with this exchange recently? I tried to withdraw cash - to a bank account I've withdrawn to before, I have two transactions sat in pending for 3 weeks now. Their support 'escalated' to the appropriate team but not sure to who because they haven't actually responded. I chased them up after a week, and they 're-escalated' but again whoever received the escalation didn't even communicate with me. Really disappointed as I had my btc with them since 2013.

Moved some btc over to Kraken and withdrew within an hour into the same account.

How can you sweep a paper wallet using Sparrow Wallet on an offline PC?

I’m trying to create a PSBT offline. I need to enter my public key paper wallet on an online PC, then transfer it to an offline PC where I’ll enter my private key. How can I enter the public key on the offline PC using Sparrow Wallet?

Im a very extraordinary forward thinker and am literally intelligent enough to where i can literally see things in advance. This foresight and insane ability to convince normal people im right in matters of facts and logic led me to convince most of my friends and family to leverage assets to borrow cash to buy BTC at 104k.

They cant see the forest for the trees like I do and they literally know NOTHING about these large dynamic systems like crypto or even economic basics.

Long story short they are NOT happy right now and liquidity is at an all time low in my friend group and family. I am normally quite able to handle any economic question on my own but this is beginning to bleed into be personal life and its affecting me dau to day.

What do we do from here? Some of these people are acting like a te.poraru downturn is going to literally kill them and im having trouble getting through to some of these people.

I'm experimenting with the idea of generating a new mnemonic for a wallet with dice. I've never owned a hardware wallet (yet) and and wanting to generate a new seed for one in the future.

SIDE NOTE: I'M not going to use the entropy generated that I share here. YOU SHOULD NOT use the entropy example here either. DON'T use the websites with an online computer. KNOW what you're doing before you use any information from this thread.

Back to the question. I bought dice from the dollar store (yes, just testing things out right now) and rolled all 15 in the package a few times and generate entropy. After 99 rolls (this is what I read in a few places, I looked for websites that converted the entropy to a 24 word mnemonic.

The first word of the mnemonic that is generated by the above 4 are as follows, in order:

• 640 - exotic
• 439 - cycle
• 61 - always
• 632 - exclude

The first one, I used advanced mode, turned on entropy, chose dice 1-6 and pasted it in. I noticed that it changed the entries under "Filtered Entropy" so all 6's are 0's. Then a 3 became 1, 0 became 1, then 5 to 0 and the next 3 is 0. I tried changing the mnemonic length and PBKDF2 rounds but still didn't match any other generator.

The second said that my "176" bit of entropy was lacking for a 24 word seed, and I needed 256 die rolls... so I continued:

After pasting these into the 4 sites (and manual PDF), I then was given these for 1st words:

So, the first 3 are calculating very differently.

However, when I take the HEX from the entropy section of the last one (4ef315daeb1456608ee4b5784f166993f11fc6e7e608f908d8d47f6d8d3c955f) and paste that HEX into the first, it gives me "exclude" as the first word. The list then updates to:

• exclude
• discover
• --- no HEX option
• --- no HEX option
• exclude (source of HEX)

I forget where I read this, but the idea of using multiple mnemonic generators with the same dice rolls was stressed to be sure there wasn't something underhanded being done in the code that selected words. If that's the case, why are most of these different?

Either way, with some manipulation, 3 agree on the first word, so those are likely safe to trust. Still I'm liking the PDF manual version.

Does anyone else have experience with this approach and have further input?

So I figured this out, but it is not possible to number the entire list as it is too big for the numbers to work. The most you can number is up to line number 9072 which is 66666, and then it reverted back to 11111.

I know how to add line numbers, but the problem is, I would like to omit any numbers that contain, (7, 8, 9, 0), and continue an incremental count as if those numbers dont exist.

My intention was to make a word list like the EFF pass phrase word list. https://www.eff.org/files/2016/07/18/eff_large_wordlist.txt

I want the numbers to start at 11111 and increment by one, but not add the numbers that are not on six sided dice.

Now I now a word list this large is not necessary and the EFF list is perfectly fine, but I wanted to do this for my own fun. Turns out, I cant figure out an easy way to do this.

There are some simple facts about the Coldcard Exploit that cannot be ignored. If one does not believe the official version, the following scenario(s) might be a logical consequence of the incomplete explanations we have seen so far.

1. Dice Entropy (the dice roll) has been and continues to be promoted worldwide by Coldcard itself and the entire Bitcoin community as the gold standard. The idea that this was an isolated "Korean phenomenon" falls far short of the mark and distracts from the actual, deep-seated contradictions.

2. The sudden "blow-up" of the system suggests an intent to generate maximum panic (Psy-op) and a call for regulated, government-run custodians. A rational, financially motivated hacker would have drained the keys unnoticed and in small increments over the course of years to avoid raising the alarm.

3. A government entity might have achieved a secret mathematical breakthrough that makes it possible to calculate private keys from certain public keys. The flaw in the Coldcard is merely a scapegoat intended to prevent a much larger panic...

As many users upload their xpub to third-party software (e.g., portfolio trackers, tax tools, or unsecured nodes) to monitor their wallets in "watch-only" mode. A government actor that monitors or hacks these servers would have access to a massive database of xpubs from around the world.

If intelligence agencies or companies specifically tapped into xpub databases from certain crypto service providers that were more popular in some countries (e.g., Canada or Europe) than in others (e.g., South Korea), this perfectly explains the precise geographic distribution of the victims. The attacker had the xpubs for Region X and was able to calculate the weakened keys in fractions of a second, whereas for Region Y, they would have had to search "blindly."

An xpub (or zpub for Native SegWit) contains two critical pieces of information in plain text: the master public key and the so-called chaincode. This eliminates the entire hash layer. The attacker can directly launch a mathematical attack on the elliptic curve.

If an attacker possesses a wallet’s xpub, they can simulate the mathematical structure of the entire key tree (BIP32) in memory. They no longer have to laboriously hash addresses for each attempt. They take the weak random value, apply it directly to the mathematical points of the xpub, and immediately see whether the equation works out. This speeds up the search process by a factor of one thousand to ten thousand.

Parent Key Leak: There is a known design vulnerability, firmly embedded in the Bitcoin protocol (BIP32), associated with non-hardened derivation, which nearly all software wallets use to display transactions. If an attacker possesses your xpub AND, by some chance, learns even a single private key of a subaddress (a child private key), they can immediately calculate the master private key for the entire wallet through simple subtraction. They then have immediate access to all addresses ever generated from that seed.

If a powerful actor (or an insider) wanted to undermine trust in cold storage, collecting xpubs would have been the ultimate goal. The question "Why Coldcard, of all things?" leads us straight to the heart of the psychology and power structures within the Bitcoin ecosystem. If an actor—whether state-sponsored, geopolitical, or operating from a technological dimension we do not fully comprehend—wanted to demonstrate that the axiom of entropy and the inviolability of cold storage are an illusion, it had to target the Coldcard.

It is therefore possible that it wasn't a random brute-force attack against the blockchain, but a targeted attack on the infrastructure that stores xpubs. Hence the repeated emphasis on the so-called passphrase—the 25-word phrase (Even if an exchange is hacked and your xpub is stolen, the xpub is mathematically worthless without your secret passphrase. The passphrase generates a completely new key tree that is invisible to the attacker).

There is another Anomaly: The latest on-chain analyses by TRM Labs (1) and Binance Square (2) reveal extremely bizarre behavior on the part of the attackers: In some wallets, only the most recent 200 transactions (UTXOs) were specifically drained, while older balances in the same wallet remained untouched. In some cases, the hackers left over 75 BTC in addresses derived from the same compromised seed. A purely mathematical brute-force bot would have taken everything. The fact that the attack was carried out in such an incomplete and selective manner supports the theory that the attackers were acting according to a specific, person-specific logic or filter list—or that certain funds were deliberately spared.

If the Coldcard hack was purely a blind software bug, why does the on-chain data show such an incomplete, almost selective picture of the wallets being plundered? A brute-force algorithm knows no mercy and leaves no millions untouched. Could it be that the code bug was merely a cover, and the real attacker had a precise filter list of real names and device UIDs to specifically target certain individuals while deliberately sparing others?

Very painful guys. Finally accepted my fate, but how unlucky can someone be? FTX & CC hack took 6 years of stacking away from me. Should have bought a car instead. Anyone in similar shoes and still stacking?

Considering the decreasing return every cycle and the decreasing drawdown every cycle, what is your realistic progression of bitcoin in the 2030s?

It’s been a mathematical regression until this point and I can see one more cycle going to the 170 k - 200 k usd by end of 2029 but the drawdown of 60 % would likely have bitcoin at around 90 k in 2030 and the next cycle after that will likely only go up by 2.5 or something so you kind of fall into a perpetual state of pendulum if the current trend of cycles is extrapolated.

There’s really only two things in my mind that happen, it loses the cycle behaviour and becomes like any other asset that falls on supply and demand or people lose faith in the underlying value and it trends to 0

I'm trying to switch from Coldcard Q to Blockstream Jade Plus.
But it's difficult to enter a lengthy passphrase in small Jade Plus with two keys, and I'm afraid I'll type something incorrectly and create a wallet that I can't get back.

Is it okay to create a seed with dice and enter the seedphrase and a passphrase both in Coldcard Q and Jade Plus, connect coldcard Q to Sparrow in QR airgap mode, obtain the Master fingerprint and xpub, then compare it with Blockstream?

I'm not going to use Coldcard Q for any transactions. So hope there won't be a nonce attack threat.

Is it possible for my seed or passphrase to be leaked by entering it into Coldcard Q?

I am not a core developer or a Bitcoin expert, but looking at the statistical and logistical data of the recent exploit, the official 'software bug' explanation leaves huge logical gaps. Here is why...

The official post-mortem of the recent Coldcard exploit points to a 2021 build configuration flaw that forced a fallback to a weak pseudo-random number generator (PRNG). While the cryptographic reduction of entropy to around 40-bits on affected devices explains how keys could be brute-forced, the actual on-chain execution and statistical anomalies strongly suggest that the bug was not the sole catalyst.

The data suggests that the attacker did not perform a blind, brute-force scan of the blockchain. Instead, the evidence points toward a highly targeted operation utilizing pre-existing metadata.

Here are the key anomalies that the official version fails to reconcile:

1. The Impossibility of Wave 1 Velocity (July 30, 2026)

The attack began at 01:31 UTC on July 30. Within exactly 41 minutes, 1,196 high-value addresses were systematically drained of 1,082 BTC. To achieve this speed, an attacker cannot scan the entire Bitcoin state blindly. Even with a 40-bit search space, querying the blockchain or an indexer for thousands of specific addresses sequentially within minutes requires an existing map. The attacker knew exactly which addresses to hit first.

2. Extreme Geographical Discrepancies

According to preliminary exchange IP data and community tracking, the victim pool is heavily concentrated:

* North America: ~45% of total victims.

* Europe: ~35% of total victims.

* Asia (specifically South Korea): Less than 2%.

If this were a blind cryptographic exploit affecting identical global firmware, the victim distribution should strictly mirror total worldwide device sales. The massive disparity suggests the attacker targeted specific infrastructure—such as western DCA brokers or localized databases that hold client xpubs/zpubs—rather than random global targets.

3. Incomplete and "Surgical" Wallet Draining

Blockchain analysis from TRM Labs revealed that the attacker frequently left substantial funds untouched on the same seed. In several instances, newer UTXOs were swept while older balances (exceeding 75 BTC) on the exact same derivation paths remained unspent. A blind, automated script would liquidate 100% of an unlocked seed. The selective nature points toward a targeted filter list or automated scripts that only had access to partial transaction histories/xpub sub-trees.

4. The Contact Paradox

Numerous affected users report being directly contacted regarding the breach, despite assurances that customer purchasing data had historically been purged in accordance with data-retention policies. If an off-chain link between device UIDs, firmware status, and user identities still existed, it creates a massive honeypot. It implies the attacker may have operated with an exfiltrated database containing logistical shipping dates, device IDs, and customer metadata.

Conclusion:

The PRNG firmware flaw was the mechanism, but an aggregated dataset of user identities, xpubs, or device shipping logs was almost certainly the trigger. We need to stop treating this as just a software bug and start investigating the systemic failure of supply chain data, third-party xpub aggregators, and data retention compliance.

What are your thoughts? Has anyone looked deeper into which specific DCA-broker or portfolio tracker databases might have been compromised prior to July 30?

I believe keeping cryptocurrency on centralized exchanges is actually a solid choice. The barrier to entry for cold storage and hardware wallets is extremely high, and a single moment of carelessness can leave you vulnerable to hackers or costly mistakes. Just look at the recent on-chain transaction where a user lost a fortune due to a massive fat-finger error on gas fees.
I know the counterargument: people always bring up Mount Gox and early exchange hacks. But much like traditional banks in their early days, exchanges had growing pains. Today’s major platforms are vastly more mature in their asset custody and security infrastructure than they were years ago.
Even if you take a more hardcore approach and use open-source software to build or manage your wallet, the risk of theft remains. Open-source does not automatically make software immune to exploits—after all, how many people on this planet actually have the technical expertise to audit that code and catch subtle vulnerabilities? For the vast majority of users, letting a modern, well-capitalized exchange secure your assets is simply the more practical choice.

I sent money to a wallet and a picked the 20min option and then something popped up a 5 min hold or something ? Never seen before then it sent my money to the wallet but it still says not complete and the person hasn’t gotten it and it still says pending on my end … so where is my money or like what is happening … anyone know. ?

Today I made my first $BTC buy tranche based on the metrics from the my Happy Wick app. Seeing Bitcoin 2% below the 200W SMA alongside an MVRV ratio of 1.19 gave me a strong signal. Factoring in the DXY at 99.64 and the US10Y at 4.7%, these are great indicators to start positioning for the next bull run.

I am about to create my new seed for my Trezor (either using the Trezor itself or dice I haven’t decided) after the CC fiasco and I have been thinking about this for several days now.

Imagine there was no seed phrase at all. Instead, you generated seven completely random words yourself using physical dice and a 7776 word Diceware list, and those seven words were your entire secret.

That gives roughly 90 bits of entropy, or around 1.2 × 10²⁷ possible combinations. Even assuming an attacker could test one trillion guesses every second, it would take roughly 20 million years on average to find the correct combination.

So why do we need a 24-word BIP39 seed containing 256 bits of entropy?
Wouldn’t ~90 bits of genuinely random, independently generated entropy already make brute forcing effectively impossible?

I’m not suggesting anyone actually replace their BIP39 seed with seven words just to be clear! I’m asking the more fundamental question of why we need 256 bits of entropy when seven properly dice-generated words already seem to provide vastly more brute force resistance than we could realistically need.

I am utterly displeased with the whole fiasco that had happened. Luckily i did not lose funds however my trust in coinkite is lost and i would like to return the device back to coinkite and i want a refund. Has anyone thought of doing the same ?

It’s been 10 year of stacking. Just over 10BTC. With an average buy price right at $5700. All for some stupid house for these dumb ass kids and this wife thing I got hanging around. I know this was the whole point of it all but man it’s like losing a friend in a way. BTC has been around than a lot of my relationships I currently have. I’ll still stack but man am I sad.

I think we are in the midst of an delayed 2024 (4th) cycle that never began or ended or ever was…(the price will have to catch up)…now

2020 Cycle began Oct 2020 until July 2025 [10-120k]
2024 Cycle begins Oct 2026 until July 2028 [60-360k]

These cycles have been somewhat smashed together because of government interventions and market manipulations which throw off the natural timing of things. Chokepoint killed FTX to end 2020 cycle early and delayed the beginning of the 2024 cycle until now. AI has the potential of running up SPY and QQQ another 50% which will provide BTC with plenty of room to run with it.

To make this simpler going forward, I believe cycles will be in the halving years plus 2 year delay format [2028+2], [2032+2], etc.

Is my target of 360k for 2028 too low?

Im exploring ways to stack BTC autonomously. From DCA to setting a reminder or timer to buy once my paycheck hits. Does anyone have a preferred method? Also whats neat is cashapp has a feature like acorns that rounds up buys using your cashapp card into BTC.

I know bitcoin would be the least of your concern at that point but my question is, will you be carrying your seed phrases/hw wallet with you at that moment? In most movies at that moment, no one even cares about money but I'm curious if anyone has a different take.

My guess is whether we believe we can rebuild. If we do, then possibly.

I am in no way a security expert, just a concerned HODLer. I am looking to move to multi-sig. Bitkey has been held up as one of the user friendly ways to get that done. But I have concerns on how this security model works.

You have 3 keys. You have 2 of them. One on the device and one on your phone. The third key Bitkey holds. Here is what is concerns me. First - you don't hold the seed phrases\keys.

Bitkey’s hardware key is generated and stored completely offline in a secure enclave. Only your fingerprint can enable the key, so it’s useless to anyone else.

App key
Bitkey’s app key is stored, as the name implies, in the Bitkey mobile app. A backup copy is encrypted and saved to your personal cloud account for recovery.Since the backup is encrypted in your cloud account, Bitkey can never access it and it’s useless to an attacker without your cloud credentials and unlocked hardware.

Server key
A third key is stored on secure servers to help with recovery if you ever lose your Bitkey. Server keys run in an AWS Nitro Enclave. Any code changes require multi-engineer approval with hardware-token authentication.
So your app key is stored online and the one Bitkey holds is online. And if you loose your hardware Bitkey is able to restore that key. So Bitkey holds all three keys?
One of the first things I learned about $BTC security is keep your keys as far away from online as possible. Don't put them in a password manager or anything like that.
So do I have all of this wrong or am I being over paranoid?

Full disclosure: I’m old (63) and don’t understand the nuances of Bitcoin. I understand the basics and the focal points of scarcity and halving, but am having trouble getting my head around the gospel of cycling that’s based on essentially only 4 data points. Also, if everyone is aware of this inevitability, won’t that negate the advantage?

I find that the assumptions are flawed or at least oversimplified.

As part of EU regulations, whenever I send crypto from a KYC-compliant exchange to a hardware wallet, I have to specify whether the recipient is me, someone else, or a self-custodial wallet.

How do you guys handle this? I’m tempted to lie, but I’m worried about the risk of running into problems later.

We're constantly telling people to take their Bitcoin off exchanges, but we still don't really have a serious, broadly accepted security standard for how normal people should actually do it.

For years the advice was basically: buy a good hardware wallet like a Coldcard, and look at what's happening now.

Now the advice is becoming: roll your own dice, use multivendor multisig, pick an M-of-N setup, figure out backups, geographic distribution, passphrases, recovery, inheritance, etc.

At some point this gets ridiculous. Regular people should not be expected to design their own security architecture.

We need a well-funded, open-source standard that's maintained and reviewed by actual security experts. It should have clear risk models, explain the tradeoffs, and give people sensible setups based on their situation.

Right now we're basically telling people to secure their life savings by piecing together advice from Twitter, podcasts, influencers, and hardware wallet marketing/funding.

The Glacier Protocol was the last serious attempt at something like this that I know of. We need a modern Glacier Protocol 2.0.

And if the Bitcoin industry can't even raise the money to build and maintain something like this, maybe we shouldn't be surprised when normal people decide a professional custodian is better at securing Bitcoin than they are.

Makes sense people are jumpy right now due to the recent Coldcard hack literally two weeks before this. "Hardware wallet" + "breach" in the same headline twice in one month makes it feel like one big pattern, but they're not related incidents at all, so worth actually understanding what's actually going on instead of panicking right off the bat.

It wasn't Trezor that got hacked, it was ShipMonk, the company that packs and ships their orders. About 13,700 customers who ordered between May and August had their name, email, phone, and home address exposed. A smaller group of about 1,900 had just name, city, and email leaked.

Your device, your seed phrase, your firmware, none of that touched. Trezor says no device, private key or wallet backup was affected, and that its systems were not compromised. Nobody can get into your wallet from this.

If you're on that list, someone now knows you own a hardware wallet and has your home address. That's still a bad thing btw. In no way am I downplaying that. But this is not the same thing as the coldcard hack or anything close to that.

If you got the notification email from Trezor, you're affected. If you didn't, you're not. No reason to panic about the device itself either way

I have been advised not to buy and that BTCs next move could drop down below 50k.

I see our current price point as a great place to start DCAing. We are down from our last peak by 50% and we are sitting at a good resistance on the low end.

Am I crazy to see this as a great place for accumulation?

I went through the wallet-recovery tag on Bitcoin Stack Exchange and classified every question by what actually went wrong. I expected "I lost a word." That is not what is there.

Five questions are a missing or wrong seed word. Thirteen are a forgotten passphrase. Fourteen are derivation path problems, where the seed restores but the wallet comes up empty. Fifty-five are a lost or corrupted device or file.

And 429 are variants of the same thing: I have the backup and I cannot reconstruct the wallet. Old formats, discontinued software, 15 words, 16 words, wallet.aes.json, MultiBit, blockchain.info exports.

For scale, that tag has around 1.58M views. The inheritance-plan tag has 15 questions and around 31K views. People run into losing access while alive far more than they run into what happens after they die, but most of the writing I find is about the second one.

So the dominant failure mode is not that people lack a backup. It is that they have one and it is not enough. The words survived. What died was the context that makes the words mean something: which wallet created them, whether there is a passphrase, what derivation path, whether it was m-of-n, sometimes which software.

Two questions for anyone who has actually done a restore.

First: when you restored, or tried to, what was missing besides the words? I am after the specific thing that stopped you, not general advice.

Second: what do you keep next to your seed backup today? Descriptor, xpub, derivation path, a note about the wallet, nothing? And has anyone ever verified it is enough, rather than assuming?

I am mostly interested in the second one. My suspicion is that a lot of us write down 12 words, feel finished, and have never once checked whether those 12 words alone would get us back in. I would like to know if that suspicion is wrong.

I've always wondered about buying BTC, but, should i really invest part of my savings monthly in BTC and expcet something great to hapen?

I want to allocate 50€ monthly into it, should i? What would you do in my situation?

The number of wallets holding at least 10,000 BTC has climbed back to a six-month high of 90 wallets.

That may sound like a relatively small change, but the trend is worth watching. Over the past eight weeks, the network has seen a net increase of 6 wallets in this category - roughly a 7.1% rise.

At the same time, smaller wallet balances have been declining during August, suggesting that some of the supply is gradually shifting away from smaller holders and toward the largest wallets. Market uncertainty, recent security concerns, and delays around crypto legislation have clearly contributed to more cautious sentiment among retail participants.

And while smaller holders appear to be reducing their exposure, the largest Bitcoin wallets are increasing their presence again. Of course, wallet concentration alone doesn't tell us where price goes next cause large holders can accumulate for many different reasons, and on-chain data should always be viewed in context.

Still, seeing 90 wallets with 10K+ BTC after a sustained period of market uncertainty is a notable change in Bitcoin's supply distribution.

I want to invest in BTC, and the way i want to invest is: every now and then put like 10/15$ in it and do it for like a year. Is that a good idea and what would be my potential ROI?

Boltz is the non-custodial swap provider connecting Bitcoin mainchain, Lightning, and Liquid, used as backend infrastructure by ZEUS, Aqua, and Bull Bitcoin. On August 3 they pulled the plug on everything, not because of a breach, nobody lost funds since they never hold custody, but because they said months of AI-assisted probing had escalated to a pace their small team couldn't keep patching against.

Their statement was blunt: "Attackers now iterate faster than a team our size can find and patch. This is not a response to a single incident."

Three wallets lost swap functionality within hours with basically no warning. Blockstream announced Blockstream Swaps a week later, on August 10, clearly moving to fill the gap.

Worth being honest that this is Boltz's own account, no independent technical report has been published yet, but the broader pattern lines up with other recent data points. Blockaid reported over a billion dollars lost to hacks in just the first half of 2026, already surpassing all of 2025. Coinbase scaled back its own bug bounty payouts because AI tooling flooded it with low quality duplicate submissions.

I also went back and checked the Coldcard vulnerability I covered a few weeks ago, the loss figure has climbed from 38 million to over 111 million since then. Not clear if that's newly identified historical losses or ongoing exploitation, and I didn't want to guess, so I flagged the uncertainty directly in the piece.

bitcoin hasnt had a consensus rule change since taproot activated in november 2021, longest quiet stretch in its history. bip-110's signaling window opened around block 961,632 (~aug 9) but stayed below 1% signaling through mid july and only reached about 2% by july 30. no major pool commited, f2pool refused outright, antpool stayed silent, foundry usa opened a hashrate weighted vote instead. looks like its not getting activated

next up is bip-54, which addresses a "timewarp attack" on mining difficulty adjustment. the concern is that an attacker with majority hashrate could theoretically manipulate timestamps to drive difficulty down to its lowest setting in roughly 38-40 days, letting them produce blocks way faster than normal and potentially disrupt lightning networks time based payment contracts. bip-54 would add timestamp limits at the start and end of each 2016 block difficulty period to close this off

the proposal itself isnt even new btw, work goes back to 2023-2024, got its formal bip-54 designation in april 2025, and the spec was marked complete this past may after testing

curious what people here think about the miner coordination problem this reveals. if a genuinely useful fix like bip-54 (closing an actual attack vector rather then adding new functionality) still needs to clear the same signaling threshhold that bip-110 just failed, does bitcoins soft fork activation process need rethinking, or is the high bar working as intended even when its slow

Using Sparrow Wallet and Trezor/Ledger etc. Can I use a passphrase on top of each keystore within the multi sig?

Also is this good practice or is it overkill?

As someone who has been following the BIP-110 situation fairly closely for the past couple of months, Ive learned much more about the technical underlying functions within Bitcoin than I used to know.

The BIP-110 debate and their proponents have brought up many of their grievances with the current state of Bitcoin, and many of them I agree are issues. However, when looking outside of the echo chamber, many people don’t seem to be worried about these issues as much, if at all.

So I wanted to ask questions to some of you who happen to know more about the technicals of bitcoin, why some of these issues aren’t as bad as BIP-110 made them out to be, or if these are valid issues, what are some actual changes we should be working towards to fix them.

Question 1:

BIP-110‘s main issue is the acceptance of spam on the blockchain and in blockspace. The problem with allowing this is that it will gradually increase the costs for regular people to operate their own full nodes. If allowed to continue, this would lead to an existential threat to Bitcoin where only large, centralized, institutions can operate nodes, and thereby verify transactions and run the actual code of Bitcoin.

Is this a real threat in the future? And what should regular people do to ensure they can now and in the future, afford to start up and operate their own nodes to avoid node centralization?

Question 1.1:

Core increasing OP-RETURN size large enough to contain high definition pictures exposes Bitcoin node operators not only to accelerated blockchain bloat risks explained above, but also to legal risks if morally or politically insensitive material is added to the blockchain.

What should regular node operators do to reduce or eliminate this legal risk to their nodes?

Question 2:

Attempts to debate OP-RETURN changes by those against increasing OP-Return were ignored, censored, and the changes were pushed through anyways by a maintainer who according to Jeff Booth, never held any Bitcoin of her own, showing that maintainers are not economically incentivized to act in the best interests of Bitcoin, and disagreements with policy changes will be ignored.

What can regular people do to oppose future Core changes if in theory they introduce an even more contentious change, such as tail emissions on Bitcoin supply?

Question 3:

The failure of BIP-110 shows that block template design (not necessarily hash rate) is centralized enough that the game theory of UASFs does not work anymore in coercing miners to accept changes suggested by node operators. Apparently this never even worked for Segwit either.

What can regular node operators do to force changes with Bitcoin policy which miners may not support?

(My only idea is that we need to invest more into hash rate markets such as the Braiins marketplace and decentralized mining pools like Ocean +DATUM enough that hashing power starts leaving the more centralized mining pools and block template design power in is more evenly spread across different pools/nodes.)

Someone who knows a little more about this than I do and could answer these for me would be a great help. Because as I see it, these are valid concerns the BIP-110 has brought forth but there are no other attempts to address these problems than BIP-110. Even as ineffective as it would’ve been, it was at least an actual attempt to do something to fix these problems and according to game theory, should’ve been adopted by miners. They fact it wasn’t makes me wonder what can we act do to address the issues they expressed.

So we see alot of discussion currently around multisig, passphrases etc. what wallet is save bla.

What no one mentioned yet is shamir backup with trezor. So you could make a 2/3 situation where 1 key is online and 2 keys are on different places. A friend or family member or your bank place. And i saw that you also can add a passphares like a bitbox.

Wouldnt this be secure and save against like most szenarios?

What are your thoughts on this commonly debated topic? I've read the arguments for both. I started to move towards 2/3 multisig after the coldcard incident however I can't fully commit. I really like that with single sig I can memorize both the seed and strong passphrase while of course still having solid backups saved. Point being if I am away from my backups and some emergency happens I can recover my funds wherever I'm at. With multisig that is much more difficult.
