PoS vs PoW discussion don’t make sense

It already passed over a decade since we started to have cryptocurrencies in the market, and with this we got a lot of newer projects and applications for blockchain technology.

I see a lot of people discussing which is the superior model - PoW or PoS, and this discussion is just completely nonsense.

The best consensus model depends on what are main use cases and objectives of a blockchain. Both of them are pretty safe and reliable at this point.

PoW has clear advantages and disadvantages, while PoS also have clear advantages and disadvantages. I won’t talk about them because I would probably initiate a discussion about the superior model, which is exactly what I don’t want to do.

The truth is that it always depends of the goals of the project.

Let’s take a look at Monero, for instance. It is PoW and indeed it’s the better technology to accomplish Monero’s goals: a good currency with a lower inflation rate than gold, private by default transactions and complete fungibility. PoS is a worse consensus model for Monero’s objectives.

Now, let’s take a look at CRO. It is PoS and indeed it’s the better technology to accomplish CRO’s goals: fast transactions, CDC base money, high inflation for staking to pay up the cashback rewards.

You see, when analyzing a project, you shouldn’t be looking for the “superior consensus model” and then looking projects that adopts it. That’s a common mistake and I’ve done it for a long time.

What you should be doing is analyzing a project and then check if the consensus model is compatible with the project’s goals. There’s no “one size fits all” in this.
