A user recently posted on the Ethereum subreddit that they think they had been hacked. They asked if it was possible that someone could generate the same address with just a few characters switched around. While we know it is possible that some addresses can be generated with the same first and last characters, generating an address with all but a few characters swapped is highly unlikely.
The user then goes on to speculate after receiving feedback:
I think I must've somehow clicked my mouse when pasting the address, and dragged one of the characters 2 places, because my address changed from
C4D
->DC4
. Can't believe I did it without noticing and hate myself for not doing a smaller transaction first. oh well. Thanks for your reply!
So if you have a habit of moving your mouse across the address to double check it, be very careful you don't accidently drag and move a few characters! More crypto has been thrown into the void!
