Running a node is, imo, a core part of being a Bitcoiner. I think once you have learnt enough to understand the role of nodes in the network you will want to run one, and if you don't then maybe you missed something.
Being self-sovereign is the essence of bitcoin. You must define your rules for bitcoin or face being beholden to others. 2017 proved how vital nodes are to the network. I am not sure about much in bitcoin, but I'm 99% sure that there will be other ugly fights in the future.
Run a node, keep it updated with the software YOU want. Not necessarily the latest version of bitcoin core. Become a Bitcoiner.
