The Getwork protocol is special, its good for what is does and its special for what is has in the word of what it can do. Sending the work to mining machines, the Getwork protocol is a simple way for the mining machine to request work. The machines then compute the blocktemplate through a hash function known as sha-256. Sha-256 is not a part of the Getwork protocol but rather of the bitcoin protocol. It is required to be part of the work mining machines must complete in order to mathematically complete the puzzle. The big picture question of this post is to get at why wouldn't the Getwork protocol modify itself to send a nonce that is known to produce an output under the target hash. The code is there, how hasn't there been ethos to be working the mathematical formula of h(h(s||n), where n can be doubled hashde to be under target h.
