Futurama: Donkey Auction & BTC Value Speculation

I finally watched the new Futurama episode last night. Solid episode - full of satire and truth. I personally loved Bender's line "Bitcoin mining was hell! Any number you can think of, there's a number bigger than that!"

One part that resonated with me was the auction for the burro (donkey) that Bender secured with a winning bid of "fifteen millionths of a Bitcoin". Today I called my rancher friend and asked, "What's the market value of a donkey?" Well, turns out it ranges a lot. You can get a rescue donkey or one off BLM land for ~$200, but a broken or trained donkey can go for $4,000 - $10,000. The only clue you get in the auction is that it's a "near-prime burro". Nothing about training but a lot of value goes into that.

So 15 millionths of a Bitcoin (or 15 μBTC) is 0.000015 BTC. Not accounting for inflation or any other weird things that could happen to the USD, you can associate a USD/BTC exchange rate.

Low end ($200 for the donkey): $13.3 million per BTC
High end: ($10,000 for the donkey): $666 million per BTC
