TLDR

  • Coinbase says an incident at analytics vendor Amplitude exposed contact information for a small subset of its customers.
  • The exchange says it found no evidence that its own systems were breached and that customer funds were not affected.
  • The disclosure came amid other Wednesday reports of attacks on Bithumb and Daishin Securities in South Korea.
  • Coinbase has not said how many customers were affected.
Coinbase Points to Third-Party Vendor

Coinbase confirmed that some customers’ contact information was exposed in a security incident at Amplitude, a third-party analytics provider. The exchange shared the update on Wednesday through its Coinbase Support account on X.

According to the post, the incident hit a “small subset” of Coinbase users, along with customers of other companies that use Amplitude which was not described as a direct hack of the exchange. Coinbase also made two clear points: it denied that its own systems had been breached, and it said customer funds were not affected. For anyone holding assets on the platform, that second statement is the key takeaway.

Coinbase Exposure Remains Unknown

Without a number, it is quite hard to judge the real scale of the incident. “Small subset” could mean a handful of accounts or a much bigger group, and the exchange hasn’t said which. There is also not too many details on exactly what kind of contact data was exposed, so users should stay alert for suspicious emails or messages.

A Rough Day for Financial Security

The Coinbase news did not arrive in isolation. It landed alongside other cyber incidents hitting both crypto firms and traditional finance on the same day.

In South Korea, Bithumb is investigating whether a breach of its internal work platform exposed customer information. Separately, brokerage Daishin Securities reported a leak of personal and credit information tied to 38,490 customers. This pattern shows that attackers are going after every corner of the financial sector, not just crypto exchanges.

Coinbase has faced a data problem before as well. In May 2025, the exchange disclosed a separate breach that affected less than 1% of its monthly transacting users. Coinbase put the reimbursement and remediation costs at up to $400 million.

That earlier episode prompted users to watch this latest incident closely, even though the company says its own systems were not compromised.
