Advantages of application-specific rollups: a quick rant

Application-specific rollups benefit from customizability in so many different senses The obvious one is stack customizability: freedom to select components best suited for your application, without the constraints of the broader blockchain's trust assumptions. Shared layers share choices. Imagine Ethereum adopting a new data availability method. All dApps would have to conform. In contrast, app-specific rollups can choose their data availability methods, execution environments, and even multiple interoperable data sources.

Also, you have full control over economic structures and costs. Running a DEX and want to support market makers? Subsidize their gas costs. Thinking about deploying a decentralized private jet application? Please don't. Still wants to do it? Pump that blocksize, your users probably have pretty decent laptops and internet connections. Your fees will be stable as well. With appchains your app's fees aren't at the mercy of neighboring dapps popularity.You won't get gentrified out of your chain, like you did in your city. Of course there are tradeoffs. Composability is still very much an open problem, naive solutions will pay L1 costs for dapp to dapp communication.There is also the cost of having to run your own infrastructure...but thats only until RaaS solutions become operational and popular. And that won't take long.

Bottomline is, application-specific rollups are by far the best way to extract value from the fact that you only need A SINGLE HONEST USER per protocol - and that user can be you!!

It's a qualitative leap in computational scalability. And that means a leap in programmability and everything else.
