A Reminder of Caution to Scams

A general reminder that NO ONE on the internet should be trusted. Listen to your gut and make assurances when you find yourself in a situation that could potentially put ANY of your information at risk.

What happened to me:

I matched with someone on a dating site. They had a verified profile. They were also 10/10 on the attractive scale (first red flag, though I’d fancy myself a 7.5 so not unheard of lol).

We spoke for a handful of messages on app, and they quickly asked for my cell # (second red flag).

We talked about all the other mundane things people getting to know each other discuss. They said they were an accountant that worked at a family firm (half red flag). A few hours later they brought up BTC and ETH (big red flag).

They sent me a picture of themselves (I’m assuming trying to earn more trust). And near the end of the day they asked me to download WhatsApp or Telegram (red flag). With a quick Google search I discovered many people losing information on these apps by trusting links with malware.

I told this person I would happily get one after we’ve met in person. They responded with something like “If there’s no trust, maybe we shouldn’t be talking.” Lolol

Maybe I should’ve strung them along further, but I have no patience for bs. I called them out, and of course, no reply.

My point is, this person had a semi-believable guise. They were not stupid, and they were willing to play the long-con. If they had been more patient, it would have been even more believable. And they attempt to prey on people with a need (loneliness/thirstyness in this case).

TLDR: dating match had verifiable qualities, but attempts at subtle and not always obvious ways to access my information gave them away.

Stay safe and hodl. And get hardware wallet!
